Update 3:45 p.m. Friday: James City County Police have identified a woman hit and killed by an Amtrak train near the Premium Outlets as Shantay Romana Smith, 28, of James City County.

Original story:

A woman was hit and killed by an eastbound Amtrak train in James City County Friday afternoon, according to police.

James City County Police received a call around 12:10 p.m. Friday, reporting a woman had been hit by a train near the Williamsburg Premium Outlets, police spokeswoman Stephanie Williams said.

Both James City County Police and fire-rescue crews responded to the scene, located in the 5700 block of Richmond Road.

A witness was stopped at a red light, leaving the Premium Outlets, when they saw an adult woman walking through the wood line along the tracks, according to Deputy Chief Steve Rubino.

The witness said they thought the woman was wearing headphones.

The witness then saw an Amtrak train go by, but when the train passed, they no longer saw the woman.

The witness went to an officer at the outlets and told him what had happened. The officer then walked the tracks and found the woman’s body, Rubino said.

The woman was pronounced dead at the scene. Police have not identified her yet, Rubino said.

Richmond Road is closed while police investigate the death. Mooretown Road, on the other side of the tracks, remains open.

The incident is the second train-pedestrian accident in the last 24 hours in the Williamsburg area.

On Thursday, a man was struck by a freight train in the 700 block of York Street.

The incident happened around 2:30 p.m., and he died later that evening.
