Man dies after being hit by freight train in Williamsburg

A man succumbed to his injuries Thursday night after he was hit by a freight train in Williamsburg earlier that day.

A pedestrian was crossing the railroad tracks in the 700 block of York Street around 2:30 p.m. Thursday when he was hit by a train, according to the Williamsburg Police Department.

He was taken to Riverside Doctors’ Hospital Williamsburg, then to Riverside Regional Medical Center in Newport News. He died at the Newport News hospital around 8:45 p.m. Thursday night, according to police spokesman Maj. Greg Riley.

The Williamsburg Police Department is not releasing the man’s identity until next of kin is notified, Riley said.
