Men’s Basketball travels to Towson Thursday night

For the second time in 12 days, the William & Mary men’s basketball team takes on the Towson Tigers when it travels to SECU Arena on Thursday, Jan. 25. Tip-off is set for 7 p.m. The CAA-leading Tribe is in the midst of its second, three-game road trip of the league campaign, but has won four-straight CAA road games.

The game will be streamed online via CAA.TV and Stretch Internet. Tribe fans can catch the men’s basketball action over the Tribe Radio Network with Jay Colley and Charlie Woollum on the call. W&M News and Notes

– The Tribe leads the CAA and ranks ninth nationally with six road wins. The Green and Gold has won four-straight road games, all in CAA play. It marks the 12th time in school history that W&M has enjoyed a four-game road win streak in a season and the fourth under head coach Tony Shaver. The school record is seven, which was set by Shaver’s 2009-10 team. It is the program’s seventh road win streak of four games or more in conference play. W&M last won five-straight road games in the Southern Conference in 1942.

– Over the last five years, the Tribe is the winningest program in the CAA in terms of league wins (49) and overall winning percentage (61.6). W&M’s 90 wins over the last five years are just one behind Towson’s league-leading 91. The Tigers have played nine more games than the Tribe during that stretch.

– The Tribe is the best shooting team in the country, ranking among the top 10 at all three levels. W&M leads the country in both free throw (80.7) and 3-point (44.5) percentage, while ranking seventh in field goal percentage (50.8). W&M is the only team in the country to rank among the top 20 in all three shooting categories. No team in NCAA history has shot 50 percent from the field, 40 percent from 3-point range and 80 percent from the free throw line in the same season.

– W&M connected on 16 3-pointers and shot 51.6 percent from distance in the win at Elon. The 16 triples were the fifth-most in program history and the second most in a CAA game. It also marked the seventh time this season that W&M hit 15 or more 3-pointers in game. Prior to this season, the Tribe accomplished the feat nine times and 14 of W&M’s 16 occasions have come under head coach Tony Shaver. W&M is 7-0 this season and 40-8 (.833) under Shaver when shooting 50 percent from distance.

– Sophomore Nathan Knight was named to the Lou Henson Award Mid-Season Watch list, which annually recognizes the nation’s top Division I mid-major player. He ranks second in the CAA and 54th nationally at 19.4 points per game to go along with eight rebounds. Knight, who is a two-time CAA Player of the Week, ranks 58th nationally with seven double-doubles, including three of the 30-point, 10-rebound variety and four in CAA play.

– According to advanced statistical website KenPom.com, the Tribe ranks eighth nationally in effective field goal percentage (58.5) and 37th in adjusted offensive efficiency  (113.9). W&M has been in the top 60 in adjusted offensive efficiency each of the previous four seasons with a high of No. 31 in 2015. W&M has ranked among the top 25 in effective field goal percentage each of the last six seasons, including as high as No. 6 in both 2013-14 and 2014-15.

– Senior David Cohn owns 402 assists in his three seasons at W&M, which is only eight shy of the school record. He ranks 24th among active Division I players in career assists with 431 after playing his freshman season at Colorado State. Cohn leads the CAA and ranks 16th nationally at 6.3 assists per game.

– W&M is averaging 85.2 points per game, which leads the CAA and ranks 17th nationally. The scoring average would be the highest in the CAA since 1996 (Mason at 90.6). The Tribe owns a school-record four 100-point games in 2017-18, including a school-record 126 vs. Milligan. W&M scored the most points on the road in program history with 108 at Savannah State.

– On four occasions this season, the Tribe has rallied from a double-digit deficit to pull out a win. W&M trailed by as much as 16 at Mason, 14 at JMU, 10 at Drexel and 20 at home vs. JMU. Against the Dukes on Jan. 11, W&M trailed by 18 with 12:15 to play, 13 at the five-minute mark and nine with just 50 seconds left. Under head coach Tony Shaver, the Tribe has rallied from a double-digit hole 26 times.

– Senior Connor Burchfield and sophomore Matt Milon are both among the national leaders in 3-point shooting. Burchfield leads the country at 51.4 percent from long range, while Milon is sixth at 49.1 percent. Burchfield is the active NCAA Division I career leader at 50.2 percent from 3-point range followed closely by Milon at 49.2 percent. Both players rank 52nd nationally in 3-pointers made (2.9).

– The Green and Gold leads the CAA and ranks 24th nationally in assist-to-turnover ratio at 1.40. It marks the fifth-straight season that the Tribe has ranked among the top 40 in the country and the third consecutive in the top 25. Last season, W&M ranked 18th nationally in assist-to-turnover ratio at 1.40 after coming in 11th at 1.51 in 2015-16.

– Senior David Cohn has increased his scoring in CAA action, producing 20 or more points on four occasions in league play. He twice set a career-high with 26 points in victories over Hofstra and at Drexel. Cohn, who is averaging 13.7 points per game overall, is up to an 18.1 scoring average in CAA play, which ranks fourth in the league.
