Attention veterans: Thomas Nelson Community College will now give hiring preference to job-seeking veterans at its campuses.
The college is one of five community colleges and more than 20 four-year schools in the commonwealth to earn the Virginia Values Veterans certification, according to a Thomas Nelson Community College news release.
“We are excited about this opportunity to enhance the college’s employee base with veterans who bring a broad range of skills to the table and to play a role in demonstrating how Virginia values Veterans,” said interim human resources director for the college Donna Norman.
As part of the certification, the college was required to create a veteran hiring plan.
The college’s Hampton campus has a dedicated veterans center.
Virginia Department of Veterans Services (VDVS) Commissioner John Newby pledged VDVS’s unequivocal support of the college by increasing awareness of veteran recruitment, sharing lessons learned and best practices.
Former Gov. Terry McAuliffe said more than 26,000 have been hired through Virginia Values Veterans since 2012, according to the release. He pushed the certification program to get an additional 25,000 veterans employed by January 2018.
