Sinfonicron Light Opera Co. performs its last play ahead of Phi Beta Kappa Hall renovation

Phase two of the plan includes the renovation of Phi Beta Kappa Hall. Theatre and speech will move out of PBK Hall in the summer of 2018, with faculty offices and classes moving into Morton Hall. The curtain will rise on a completely student-run play at the Phi Beta Kappa Memorial Hall this weekend.

William & Mary’s Sinfonicron Light Opera Co. will present Gilbert and Sullivan’s “The Grand Duke” between Thursday, Jan. 18 and Sunday Jan. 21, according to a news release from the student organization.

Their adaptation of the play tells the tale of a troupe of English actors who organize a plot to overthrow the stingy Grand Duke Rupert and install their own manager in his place.

Of course, nothing goes according to their plan, and a different member of the troupe becomes duke. They must then navigate marital commitments and claims to the dukedom as they discover what happens when actors are in charge.

The Sinfonicron Light Opera Co. is made entirely of William & Mary students, and “The Grand Duke” will be directed, performed and produced by students from the college.

“The Grand Duke” will be Sinfonicron Light Opera Co.’s final play at the Phi Beta Kappa before the hall undergoes renovations beginning in May.

Shows begin at 7:30 p.m. Thursday through Saturday, and at 2 p.m. Saturday and Sunday.

Tickets can be purchased at the Phi Beta Kappa box office, by calling (757) 221-2674 or online at Sinfonicron’s website.
