VIRGINIA BEACH — Between one and two inches of snow is expected to fall on the Southside Wednesday as a cold front moves through the region, meteorologists say.

Snowfall is expected to begin in the morning and continue to fall into the early evening before moving out of the area. Wednesday’s temperatures are forecast to be in the teens with a high of 20 degrees, and they are expected to stay low throughout the night, said Wakefield National Weather Service meteorologist Mike Montefusco.

“The secondary roads will remain snowy or ice covered into Thursday afternoon and evening,” Montefusco said.

Thursday’s temperatures will stay in the high 30s; however, Montefusco they will drop into the 20s overnight into Friday morning.

“Certainly some refreezing will be an issue Thursday night through Friday,” he said.”

Temperatures will be on the rise beginning Friday when they are expected to be between the 40s and 50s. They will continue to rise into the 50s on Saturday and into the 60s on Sunday, Montefusco said.

As of Tuesday morning, Virginia Beach City Public Schools officials haven’t decided if schools would be closed due to snowfall. Students returned to school on Jan. 12 after missing six days due to a blizzard that hit the region with between 10 and 12 inches of snow on Jan. 4.

“We are continuing to monitor the forecast at this time,” VBCPS spokeswoman Eileen Cox wrote in an email.

“Any needed change to school operations will be shared through an Alert Now call, email and text to parents and staff. Information will also be posted on the division’s website and social media channels,” she added.

Norfolk Public Schools officials are meeting Tuesday afternoon to discuss potential scenarios should the snow’s impact be significant, according to spokesperson Khalilah LeGrand.
