Norfolk to honor Martin Luther King Jr. with free concert, public art

NORFOLK — Norfolk will celebrate the accomplishments of Martin Luther King Jr. on Sunday and Monday with a free concert and the dedication of public art.

The Virginia Symphony will perform a free concert titled “Songs for a Dreamer — A Tribute to Dr. Martin Luther King Jr.” on Sunday. The concert beings at 7 p.m. at Calvary Revival Church, located at 5833 Poplar Hall Drive, according to a news release.

On Monday, the city will host a ceremony honoring King at the Attucks Theatre, located at 1010 Church Street. The 10 a.m. ceremony will include the dedication of a public art piece titled “Ascension to a Higher State of Being,” by Ayokunle Odeleye, the release states.

After the ceremony, people are invited to march to the Dr. Martin Luther King Jr. memorial to lay wreaths.
