James City County has named an interim county administrator.

The James City County Board of Supervisors announced at their monthly meeting Tuesday that William C. Porter will take over for current County Administrator Bryan Hill on Jan. 2, 2018.

Hill announced in November that he has accepted the county executive position with Fairfax County in Northern Virginia. Hill’s last day as James City County administrator is Jan. 1.

Porter has previously served as assistant county administrator and twice as interim Executive Director of the Williamsburg Area Transit Authority.

Porter has nearly 40 years of experience working in local government, including a 12-year stint as the Assistant James City County Administrator. He retired from that job in September 2008.

The board went into a closed session near the end of their meeting. While in closed session they discussed Porter’s appointment.

After returning, Supervisor Ruth Larson motioned to appoint Porter as interim administrator. The board voted unanimously in favor of the motion.

Hill served as James City County administrator since September 2014. He came from Beaufort County, S.C., where he previously served as deputy county administrator.

“I just want to say thank you to the board for this great time I’ve been able to have with you here in James City County,” Hill told the board members during the administrator reports.
