25-year-old charged with murder in connection with Norfolk Garden shooting

NORFOLK — A 25-year-old Norfolk man has been charged with murder in connection to a fatal shooting Sunday in the Norfolk Garden area.

Gary Lee Drew Jr., of the 400 block of E. Little Creek Road, is accused of shooting and killing 31-year-old Claude M. Smith.

Police were called the scene in the 1000 block of Ivaloo Street just before 2 a.m. where they found Smith shot inside of a car. He was pronounced dead at Sentara Norfolk General Hospital.

A second man was also found shot inside of an area home. He was taken to a local hospital with serious injuries but is expected to survive, according to the Norfolk Police Department.

Drew is charged with second-degree murder and malicious wounding, as well as two counts of using a gun in the commission of a felony. He was arrested on Monday afternoon by fugitive task forces belonging to the NPD and the U.S. Marshals.

Drew is currently being held in the Norfolk City Jail without bond. He is scheduled to appear in the city’s district court on Tuesday for an arraignment.
