Come the new year, the location of your car’s safety inspection will change.

Virginia state inspection stickers will no longer be placed in the center of a car’s windshield as of Jan. 1. Instead, authorized safety inspection agencies will move the stickers to the bottom left corner of a car’s windshield, according to the Virginia State Police.

The change comes as new technology for crash avoidance has been developed by car manufacturers, according to the VSP. That technology often uses the center of a car’s windshield and could fail to work if a sticker is placed there.

Change will come gradually. If you currently have an up-to-date safety inspection sticker, it won’t be relocated until you get it renewed.
