Red Cross calls for Hampton Roads blood donors this Thanksgiving

If you want to help people in need this Thanksgiving, think about donating blood.

That’s the message the American Red Cross is getting out to Hampton Roads residents with its 2WD Thanks for Giving Blood Drives.

“During the busy holiday season[,] many donors are busy and spending time with loved ones – but the need for blood doesn’t stop because it’s the holiday weekend,” Bernadette Jay, external communications manager for the Mid-Atlantic & Appalachian Blood
Services Region, said in a release. “The need is constant.”

Between Thanksgiving and New Year’s, blood donations often dip as potential donors become busy with the holidays. But the need for blood – for cancer patients, accident victims, children with blood disorders and surgical candidates – doesn’t diminish at this time of year, the release said.

“Hospital patients are depending on blood donations so they can enjoy
another holiday with their loved ones,” said Jay.

For a list of donations sites and times between Nov. 24 and Nov. 26, including Patrick Henry Mall and the Virginia Beach Convention Center, go here.
