VIRGINIA BEACH — A 50-year-old man who raped a woman in a Virginia Beach park at knifepoint in 1992 was sentenced to 50 years in prison on Wednesday.
Robert Lee Lane was already serving life in prison plus an additional 220 years in connection to charges of rape and abduction not related to the 1992 incident when he pleaded guilty to the cold case crime on Wednesday.
DNA evidence retested in 2016 linked him to the Nov. 4, 1992 attack on a woman who was walking home from work in the Magic Hollow Area, according to the Virginia Beach Commonwealth’s Attorney’s office.
Lane was riding a bike when he saw the woman walking down the street. He called her “sexy,” and when she ignored him he approached her from behind and held a knife to her neck. He led her to a park and raped her on a table at knifepoint, authorities say.
The woman went home and she and her husband called police. Officials performed a rape kit on her which collected the DNA that was ultimately linked to Lane.
