VIRGINIA BEACH — A former Virginia Beach Police Department recruit was arrested Friday and charged with domestic assault and abduction, according to officials.
Warrants were taken out by the Hampton Police Department for the arrest of 33-year-old Don Edward Irk on Friday. Those warrants were served on the same day by the VBPD.
According to Hampton police, Irk was arrested as a result of a fight that happened on Nov. 3. The victim told police that they were fighting with Irk before he physically assaulted them. After the assault, Irk refused to let the victim leave the home. When the victim escaped, they sought help.
At the time of his arrest, Irk was a VBPD recruit; however, he had not graduated or become a sworn officer. As of Monday, he is no longer employed by the city, said VBPD spokeswoman Linda Kuehn.
Irk is being held at the Virginia Beach Correctional Center without bond.
