(Photo Gallery) Urbanna is for oyster lovers, town celebrates 60th oyster festival

Thousands of people showed up on Friday and Saturday to get a taste of the Urbanna Oyster Festival. This year marks its 60th anniversary.

According to organizers, the Town of Urbanna is a true Oyster town and the best place to taste, buy and try all things oyster-related.

This year’s festivities included wine tastings, oysters prepared in every way, a fireman’s parade, live music and an oyster shucking contest.

The festival started in 1958, then called Urbanna days. According to the Urbanna Oyster Festival website, a group came before the Town Council and requested $150 to help with activities of Urbanna Days. The request was approved. Two years later,  the name was changed to the Urbanna Oyster Festival.

The festival is sponsored by the Urbanna Oyster Festival Foundation, a non-profit organization promoting educational and civic events throughout the year.
