VIRGINIA BEACH — A 62-year-old man died while swimming in Sandbridge on Wednesday afternoon, police said.
David J. Granski died of accidental drowning while swimming in the 2500 block of Sandfiddler Road, according to the office of the Tidewater Chief Medical Examiner.
The Virginia Beach Police Department was called to the area when he did not resurface around 2:30 p.m.
Police said bystanders entered the water to pull Granski to shore and began to give him CPR. Virginia Beach Fire Department and EMS members took over resuscitation efforts but were unsuccessful. Granski was pronounced dead at the scene.
The case is being investigated by Virginia Beach police detectives.
