Williamsburg has hired an 18-year veteran of zoning and planning to be the city’s new zoning administrator.

Allyson Finchum has filled a “vital” role in the City of Williamsburg Planning and Code Compliance Department, according to a City of Williamsburg news release. The position has sat vacant since December 2016.

Finchum’s first day on the job was Wednesday.

Finchum’s role includes interpreting and enforcing Williamsburg’s zoning ordinances, as well as investigating violations and citizen complaints. Finchum will also coordinate permits and applications in the planning department, the release said.

Her position also provides staff support for the Board of Zoning Appeals, Planning Commission and the Architectural Review Board.

“This position requires the ability to work with the public — contractors, home owners, counterparts from other jurisdictions and commission and committee members,” Carolyn Murphy, director of planning and codes compliance, said in the release. “Allyson has the experience, knowledge and community-mindedness that are valued by the City.”

Finchum’s previous 18 years of experience consist of jobs in Louisa, Fluvanna, and Charles City counties as well as the Richmond Regional Planning District Commission, according to the release.

She holds a bachelor’s degree in communications and a master’s degree in urban and regional planning, the release said.
