VIRGINIA BEACH — A man accused of injuring five people — one critically — in a head-on collision was driving drunk, police said.
Carl Jordan Hylton, 37, of Norfolk, was charged with driving while intoxicated and maiming as a result of driving while intoxicated on Sept. 10 — hours after he was involved in a crash that injured four people and left a fifth in critical condition, according to the Virginia Beach Police Department.
According to police, the crash happened around 2:45 a.m. when Hylton was driving south on Greenwich Road in a car with three other people in it. Hylton was allegedly speeding into a curve in the road when he crossed the yellow line and hit an SUV driven by someone heading north.
Both vehicles were heavily damaged and fire crews worked for “an extensive period of time” to remove both drivers, police said.
Hylton is currently in jail. He is scheduled to appear in Virginia Beach General District Court on Nov. 17.
