Magnolia Circle Dragon Boat Race & Festival returns to benefit CHKD

NORFOLK — The Magnolia Circle Dragon Boat Festival is coming back and registration is still open.

The third annual fundraising event is scheduled for Sept. 16 at the Nauticus Pier located at 1 Waterside Drive.

The festival is organized by the Magnolia Circle, a group dedicated to raising money for The Children’s Hospital of the King’s Daughters.

Since its start back in 2015, the race has attracted participants to the Elizabeth Riverfront in downtown Norfolk for the competition.

Teams for this event consist of up to 25 people, ages 12 and up.

Historically, dragon boat racing dates back thousands of years in Chinese culture, but has been incorporated into a recreational sporting event.

According to the CHKD’s event site, no prior experience is needed for the race. Training and equipment will be provided to teams at the festival.

Along with the boat race, there will be food, beverages, including O’Connor Brewing Co. beer, and other entertainment.

The festival is free and open to the public, while there are varying entry fees for individuals looking to participate in the race.
