Raccoon tests positive for rabies in Poquoson

Health officials are warning the public that a raccoon has tested positive for rabies in Poquoson.

The rabid raccoon was found in the area of Marie Court and Dorothy Drive, according to a press release from the Peninsula Health District.

Immediate neighbors of the area and local civic and homeowner associations will be contacted by the Peninsula Health District, the release said. 

Anyone who had exposure to the raccoon — including bites, scratches, contact between saliva and opens wounds or exposure to family pets — is advised to contact the Health Department at Peninsula Health District at 757-594-7340.

After hours, contact Newport News/ Poquoson Animal Control at 757-595-7387.

Health officials remind all citizens to vaccinate pets, report all exposures to wild animals, and enjoy wildlife from a distance.
