Virginia Beach police: Dog shot and killed during DUI stop

VIRGINIA BEACH — An officer shot and killed a dog during an alleged drunk driving arrest, police said.

The traffic stop happened around 9:20 p.m. on Monday when the officer tried to arrest Theodore Stephen Schlossman, 38, for allegedly driving under the influence in the 900 block of Norfolk Avenue, according to the Virginia Beach Police Department..

When the officer tried to arrest Schlossman, police say he resisted and released his dog from the Chevrolet Tahoe he was driving. When the dog started to become aggressive, the officer shot and killed it, according to the VBPD.

Schlossman was charged with driving under the influence, refusal to submit to breath analysis, resisting arrest, obstruction of justice, possession of a schedule II narcotic, possession of marijuana and threatening the life of a law enforcement officer.

The case is under investigation by the VBPD’s professional standards office.
