Virginia Beach man sentenced to 40 years for killing wife, shooting stepson

VIRGINIA BEACH – A 53-year-old Virginia Beach man was sentenced to 40 years in prison on Tuesday for killing his wife and shooting his stepson.

James White, Jr., of the 5500 block of Baccalaureate Drive, was found guilty of first-degree murder, malicious wounding and two counts of use of a firearm.

James and his wife Bridgette White lived at the Baccalaureate Drive residence with her two sons. After a fight on May 7, 2015, she left the home and stayed with a friend, according to a news release.

The release said James White showed a photo of a man he believed Bridgette White was having a relationship with to one of her sons the following day. He told the boy that “if she brings him here, I’m going to blow his head off.” He then said that if Bridgette White came to the house with the man in the photo, the two would “go out together.” He then showed the boy a handgun tucked into his waistband.

Bridgette White returned to the home that afternoon with a friend to gather personal belongings, according to the release. James White entered the bedroom she was in and locked the door before hitting and yelling at her.

Afterward, Bridgette White, her two sons and the friend were in an upstairs hallway when James showed them the handgun, according to the release. James White then fired two shots – one struck Bridgette White in the face and the other hit one of her sons in the shoulder.

The son survived, but Bridgette White died at the scene.

The release said that James White ran from the home. Officers found him nearby and took him into custody, where he admitted to the two shootings.

“What really offends me is the number of lives that have been ruined … Your actions cannot be condoned by any society,” Judge William R. O’Brien told James White during Tuesday’s sentencing, according to the release.

James White was previously convicted on two counts of assault, assault and battery of a family member, gambling and two counts of driving without a license.
