A 32-year-old man was arrested Aug. 17 after he allegedly shot a gun several times into the air in Forest Glen, police say.

Antoine Chapman, of Newport News, is charged with reckless handling of a firearm and discharging a firearm in public, according to James City County Police spokeswoman Stephanie Williams.

Nine police officers responded to the 100 block of Walker Drive around 12:30 a.m. Aug. 17 after receiving a call about shots fired, Williams said.

When they arrived, police found a “large crowd” of people gathered at the intersection of Forest Glen Drive and Walker Drive.

A black truck was parked in the middle of the street with its doors open, and three men were standing outside of it, Williams said.

Officers found six 9mm shell casings and nine.45 caliber shell casings on the ground, and a Taurus .45 caliber handgun on the floorboards of the driver’s side of the truck, Williams said.

During their investigation, Chapman, who was the driver of the truck, admitted he fired the handgun into the air “several times” to break up a fight, according to police.

While Chapman admitted he fired a gun, all three men that were in the truck denied a second gun had been fired.

No charges were filed against the other two individuals in the vehicle.

Chapman is scheduled to appear in the Williamsburg-James City County General District Court at 8:30 a.m. Sept. 5.

Court records show Chapman was released on bond.
