Police: Motorcyclist hit, run over by Prius in Ghent

NORFOLK — A motorcyclist was seriously injured after a car hit and ran over him in Ghent Tuesday afternoon, police say.

The Norfolk Police Department found the 56-year-old motorcyclist pinned underneath a Toyota Prius at Colley Avenue and West 21st Street around 1:30 p.m. With the help of witnesses, police were able to free the man and take him to Sentara Norfolk General Hospital. He is expected to survive his injuries, police say.

Police believe the crash happened moments after a red light turned green. They believe the motorcyclist was stopped at the red light, with the Toyota Prius stopped behind him. When the light turned green, police believe the 37-year-old Prius driver accelerated, hitting the motorcyclist and knocking him to the ground before running over him.

The Toyota Prius driver was charged with following too closely.
