Police ID Norfolk man killed in officer-involved shooting

NORFOLK — A 39-year-old man died Sunday night after he shot a Norfolk Police officer in Ocean View.

Tyson Chad Williams, of Norfolk, died oin the 9600 block of 14th Bay Street.

The shooting happened around 11:15 p.m. after Williams shot a NPD officer in his ballistic vest, according to the Virginia State Police.

Police were in the area because they’d received reports of a man with a weapon. When they arrived at the scene, they were told that Williams had gone into a nearby home.

Police tried to speak to Williams, but he shot an officer who was standing outside the home.

Police officers returned fire, shooting Williams. They tried to give him first aid, but he died at the scene, according to police.

The NPD officer was taken to a local hospital where he was treated and released. All officers involved in the shooting have been placed on administrative duty until an investigation by the Virginia State Police is complete.

This is the first officer-involved shooting in Norfolk in 2017.
