Traffic patterns to change at Oceanfront for large Independence Day crowds

VIRGINIA BEACH — City staff are expecting many people to congregate at the Oceanfront next week for Independence Day, so it’s changing the way drivers can get there from the interstate.

From 8 p.m. on Tuesday until 1 a.m. Wednesday, crews will divert traffic heading eastbound on I-264 at Parks Avenue and redirect it westbound on the interstate.

“We need the public’s help to make sure employees, guests or other visitors are aware of these traffic changes,” said Steve Cover, deputy city manager, said in a city news release. “For everyone’s safety, we’re encouraging people to arrive early and enjoy all of the amenities at the Oceanfront and then be prepared for delays leaving the area.”

The eastbound exit for South Birdneck Road and the westbound exit for First Colonial will be closed, according to the release.

Alternate routes to the resort area include General Booth Boulevard, Virginia Beach Boulevard, Laskin Road and Shore Drive.
