VIRGINIA BEACH — With the Fourth of July right around the corner, the Virginia Beach Fire Department is reminding city residents to leave the fireworks to the professionals.
According to the VBFD, not only are fireworks illegal in Virginia, they’re also dangerous. Fireworks start an average of 18,500 fires a year – including wildfires – and 25 percent of people injured by the explosives are children under the age of 15.
But just because you can’t launch Roman candles and ground spinners out of your backyard, doesn’t mean your holiday will be without firecrackers. There are several community firework shows in Virginia Beach on the Fourth of July, including a display at the Oceanfront that begins at 9:30 p.m. and a celebration at Mount Trashmore from 4-8 p.m.
For a better understanding of firework safety, Virginia Beach residents can attend a demonstration at the city’s fire training center on June 28 at 1 p.m. The Virginia Beach Bomb squad will also present at the event.
To RSVP for the demonstration, contact Art Kohn at akohn@vbgov.com by 5 p.m. Tuesday.
