VIRGINIA BEACH — The city’s newest recreation center won’t open as originally planned due to construction delays.
The Kempsville Recreation Center’s grand opening is rescheduled to Thursday, June 29 at 11 a.m. It was originally scheduled to open on June 8.
“I hope that once guests enter the building and see how beautiful it is, and how much there is to do, they’ll forgive the delays and make visiting the center part of their weekly activities,” Michael J. Kalvort, director of Virginia Beach Parks & Recreation, said in a release.
Following the opening, admission to the recreation center will be free during the weekend from June 30-July 2 along with tours, fitness demos, food trucks, giveaways and access to all of its amenities, according to a city news release.
Summer camps scheduled to start June 19 will be relocated to local schools and move to the Kempsville Recreation Center the week of July 10.
“I know that the community is anxiously awaiting the grand opening,” Kalvort said. “No one is more disappointed than I am by the delay, but the city is committed to making sure the center is perfect before opening.”
