VIRGINIA BEACH — Cinco de Mayo, which observes the Mexican Army’s 1862 victory in the Battle of Puebla against the French, falls on a Friday this year, and some Southside businesses plan to partake in the celebrations.
Here are six of them:
Cinco de Mayo fiesta at O’Connor Brewing Co.
O’Connor Brewing Co. will host a party Friday from noon to 10 p.m. at its downtown Norfolk brick and mortar. Festivities include drink specials, live music in the evening by Los Abejas del Norte and food truck bites from Bro’s Fish Tacos.
Waterside District
Southsiders curious about the Waterside District can get a sneak peek at the Blue Moon Taphouse on Friday from 6 p.m. to 2 a.m. Happy hour ends at 8 p.m. and people who place reservations for five or more guests can receive a $25 gift card for the restaurant, according to its Facebook page.
Atlantic Shores Spring Home & Garden Tour
While it may not seem like a typical festivity for the occasion, this free event ends with a Cinco de Mayo celebration with food, drinks and steel drum music by Red Wing Lake, according to its website.
Prior to the festivities, attendees will tour retirement community homes, art galleries that feature local work, landscaping and eat food paired with wine from Spain.
The event is 11 a.m. to 3 p.m. at the Atlantic Shores Retirement Community in Virginia Beach and registration is required.
Cinco de Mayo at Sandler Center
This fiesta will take place on the steps outside the Sandler Center for the Performing Arts in Virginia Beach from 5-9 p.m.
Cheap Thrills VA will perform at the event, which will also have drinks and food trucks, including Get Stuffed — a food truck with a menu that focuses on organic gourmet tacos, burritos and wraps, according to the event page.
Pinko de Mayo at the Town Center
The Westin Hotel at the Virginia Beach Town Center is set to host a party that will benefit the Susan G. Komen for the Cure Tidewater Affiliate group.
The event is from 7-10 p.m.and tickets start at $50, according to its website.
This pink-themed philanthropic fiesta will feature live music, canapes and cocktails.
