Police have charged a James City County man with felony child abuse after his 3-month-old daughter died Saturday from injuries sustained while she was home alone with him, police said.

Bryan Timothy Arruda, 27, was home Friday with his daughter, Emery Alaine Arruda, when James City County Police received a report about an injured infant, according to a James City County news release.

Police and fire departments responded to the house, located in the 7600 block of Crestview Drive, around 3:21 p.m., the release said.

Crews arrived to find Arruda’s daughter suffering from life-threatening injuries, police said.

Police said the child succumbed to her injuries Saturday night while at Virginia Commonwealth University Medical Center in Richmond.
Arruda was arrested Monday and transported to the Virginia Peninsula Regional Jail in Williamsburg.

He is being held without bond.

The James City County Police Department and Child Protective Services are investigating the case with VCU Medical Center and the Office of the Chief Medical Examiner in Richmond, the release said.

Due to the “status of this case,” police were not releasing further information at the time of the release Monday evening.
