A 21-year-old James City County man is facing felony carjacking charges after police say he crashed his car while high on crack cocaine and LSD. After hitting the front end of a vehicle, police say he attempted to take three other vehicles stopped at the scene.
According to James City County Police Department spokeswoman Stephanie Williams, officers were dispatched to the intersection of John Tyler Highway and Greensprings Plantation Drive, near Jamestown High School, for a vehicle crash around 6:40 p.m. Saturday.
While police were en route, they were informed of a possible carjacking at the scene. On arrival, officers found a 1988 Acura with “significant driver’s side damage” and a Honda Accord with front end damage, Williams said.
Witnesses identified Paul Scott Salsman, 21 of James City County, as the driver responsible for the crash. It was determined Salsman had been driving the Acura and struck the Honda. Following the collision, Salsman exited the Acura and attempted to take three different vehicles that were stopped on scene, but he was unable to do so, Williams said.
No injuries were reported.
When police arrived at the crash site, Salsman moved away from the deputies, toward woods by the intersection. An officer ordered Salsman to stop, but he did not comply and the officer tased him, Williams said.
He reported to police that he had smoked crack cocaine and had taken LSD, Williams said.
Salsman was arrested and charged with three felony counts of attempted carjacking, one count of felony hit and run and a misdemeanor count of driving under the influence of drugs.
Additional charges may be forthcoming, but none had been taken out as of 2 p.m. Monday, Williams said.
Salsman is scheduled to appear at Williamsburg-James City County General District Court on May 2.
