This spring, area residents interested in learning about firearm safety have a golden opportunity coming up.

The James City County Police Department will offer free firearm safety classes during April, May and June, a police spokeswoman said.  The classes will take place at the Law Enforcement Center, 4600 Opportunity Way.

Each 90-minute session will cover basic safety, handling, storage and basic state laws related to carrying a concealed handgun in the Commonwealth of Virginia.

The class does not include hands-on training. Personal firearms should be left at home in a secure location.

This course meets the requirement for the “Documentation of Proof of Handgun Competency” as part of the Virginia Concealed Handgun Permit application process. A certificate of attendance will be provided to attendees.

Pre-registration is required and may be done using the following links:

Project ChildSafe provides free gunlocks that will be available to participants.

Additional questions on the course or any registration issues may be addressed to Master Officer Alan McDowell at (757) 603-6026 Stephanie Williams at (757) 259-5173.
