James City County police are searching for a man charged with child abuse after he led police on a chase with a 5-year-old boy in the car.

According JCCPD spokesperson Stephanie Williams, warrants were issued last March for 34-year-old Keshaun Michael Allen of James City County after he eluded police by abandoning a vehicle he was driving and left a boy inside the car.

On March 6, around 7:15 p.m., officers were dispatched to the intersection Magruder Avenue and Pocahontas Trail in Williamsburg with reports of a 1993 Honda driving erratically. Once deputies arrived on the scene, the vehicle turned onto Church Street and crashed into a ditch, Williams said.

The officers turned on their lights and sirens and approached the vehicle, but the car swerved back onto the road and continued driving. The officers followed the vehicle with lights and sirens activated. After a chase, the vehicle stopped and the driver left the car and fled on foot, Williams said.

Upon reaching the vehicle, an officer found a 5-year-old boy inside, who was neither in a child’s car seat nor wearing a seat belt. The driver was not taken into custody at the time, but identification for Allen was inside the abandoned vehicle, Williams said.

That day, police issued warrants for Allen on three charges, abuse and neglect of children, eluding police and driving while license is revoked.

If anyone has information that could help police locate Allen, they are asked to call 757-253-1800 or text/email tips@jamescitycountyva.gov. They can also contact the Crime Line at 1-888-LOCK-U-UP.

An earlier version of this article stated Allen’s age as 21 years old, which was due to an error in information provided by James City County police.
