hqdefaultVIRGINIA BEACH — On March 2, the City of Virginia Beach will celebrate Read Across America Day in partnership with the National Education Association and Dr. Seuss Enterprises.

Virginia Beach Mayor Will Sessoms will join more than 85 volunteers in demonstrating the importance of reading aloud to children by reading to 4,000 students involved in early care and education programs, according to a press release by the City of Virginia Beach Communications Office.

Participating children will receive a copy of  “I Can Read With My Eyes Shut” by Dr. Seuss to read at home with their families.

In addition to the reading event, a Read Across America Spirit Night and book drive will take place on March 2 from 5:30-7:30 p.m. at the Chick-fil-A at Haygood Shopping Center, 1097 Independence Blvd. Children who donate a book to the book drive will earn a free ice cream, said the press release.
