The York-Poquoson Sheriff’s Office is offering a gun safety class for residents of York and Poquoson.

According to a post on the YPSO’s Facebook page, the class will be held at the Sheriff’s Office — 301 Goodwin Neck Road in Yorktown — March 1 between 6 and 8 p.m.

“It’s basic firearm handling safety,” said Lt. Dennis Ivey. “It does give the certificate to be eligible for concealed weapon permit. We have one auxiliary deputy that teaches for us.  He volunteers his time.”

The class is lecture only and there will not be any hands-on instruction with firearms, according to the post. The class is free of charge.

“As most of you know Sheriff Diggs is very pro-second amendment,” states the class sign-up page.  “That being said he wants to make sure that everyone who wants to have a gun or carry a gun is doing so as safe as possible.”

The class is limited to 30 members. Residents of York and Poquoson can sign up here.
