VIRGINIA BEACH — A local man will spend 14 years in prison for robbing the Holiday Inn located on Greenwich Road in 2015.

Marcus J. Bowers, 29, formerly of the 5200 block of Breezewood Arch, pleaded guilty in October 2016 to two counts of robbery, two counts of abduction and three counts of use of a firearm in commission of a felony.

Prosecutors say that on Jan. 11, 2015 Bowers entered the hotel lobby donning a mask and at gunpoint forced the hotel clerk and the overnight accountant to put $400 into a plastic bag. Bowers ordered the accountant to go into the bathroom and instructed her not to leave or he would shoot her.

Bowers then told the clerk to open the safe in the back room but the clerk said she could not open it. Bowers ordered her to get under a desk for two minutes or he would shoot her, prosecutors said.

Bowers’ voice was familiar to the accountant because he was an employee who recently quit.

When police searched Bowers’ home they found clothing and a pair of Jordan Brand sneakers that matched what the masked man was wearing in hotel surveillance video.

Circuit Court Judge Steven C. Frucci issued the sentencing.
