Councilwoman Jessica Abbott is passionate about legalizing backyard hens.
“Backyard hens is the reason I ran,” said Abbott in an interview last November. “Denver did it, New York City did it … there are lots of big cities that allow people to have hens in their backyard and we’re stuck in some backwards way of thinking that people can’t have eggs.”
Now, it’s the topic of her upcoming town hall Monday, Jan. 30 from 5:30-7 p.m. at Lynnhaven Coffee Company. So far, almost 200 Facebook users have engaged with the event page.
In the meantime, Abbott is administering a survey regarding the topic. To take it, click here.
“Urban homesteading is a growing trend among millennial and older generations alike,” Abbott said in an email. “While I believe there are many benefits to urban homesteading, which includes backyard hens, I also believe hearing all thoughts from every side of the argument is equally important.”
