Westbound Richmond Road has been closed at Industrial Boulevard due to a fatal accident, police say.
According to Deputy Chief Steve Rubino of the James City County Police Department, deputies received a phone call reporting the crash at 7:45 a.m. Thursday.
A 2003 Ford Taurus traveling eastbound in the area of the 8200 block of Richmond Road crossed over the grass median. The Taurus then struck a tractor trailer head on, killing the driver of the Taurus, Rubino said.
According to a county news release, the driver of the Taurus was identified as Sandra Sarah Dunaway, 59, of Providence Forge. She was not believed to be wearing her seatbelt and was pronounced dead at the scene.
The truck driver is 40 years of age from Yorktown and was not injured.
According to Rubino, the tractor trailer had just turned right onto Richmond Road from Industrial Boulevard when the crash occurred.
The cause of the crash is still under investigation.
Westbound Richmond Road remains closed and Rubino said there was no timetable for its opening. The crashed vehicles remain on the scene.
According to a tweet from the Virginia Department of Transportation, all westbound lanes were still closed at 9:40 a.m. Motorists were advised that they should expect “major delays” and plan an alternate route.
Update 11:35 a.m.: A tweet from VDOT Hampton Roads indicates that the accident has been cleared and westbound Richmond Road is now open.
