The City of Williamsburg is searching for a new police chief and input from its citizens will factor into the decision.
According to a press release from the city, the public input period began Monday, and will conclude Tuesday, January 24.
Citizens will be able to provide their input via the city’s online Open Forum platform or by submitting emails to chiefsearch@williamsburgva.gov. Citizens are encouraged to share what they believe to be the most important personal and professional attributes required of the next police chief.
Williamsburg also sought public input before selecting Marvin Collins as City Manager, according to the release.
“We are taking the same approach in developing a profile for the new chief of police,” City Manager Marvin Collins said in the release. “We place a high value on the thoughts, suggestions and expectations of our residents, staff, business owners and students.”
Comments provided by citizens will play a role in the creation of a candidate profile, which will be submitted to a recruitment firm, according to the release. Collins will appoint the new police chief by the end of the year.
Former Williamsburg Police Chief David Sloggie retired on Jan. 1 after 40 years in the department.
Williamsburg Deputy Police Chief Andrew Barker began serving as the city’s interim police chief effective upon Sloggie’s retirement.
