With temperatures dropping, ice skating action is just heating up.
Liberty’s Ice Pavilion will soon return to Colonial Williamsburg for its second season.
According to a news release, the ice rink will open next to Merchant’s Square and will operate between Nov. 20 and Feb. 20.
Nearly 20,000 skaters visited the Ice Pavilion last winter, and their feedback has resulted in several new additions. New features include a stage for local entertainment as well as a concession stand that will be accessible to skaters.
The stand will offer beverages such as coffee, hot chocolate, tea and cider, as well as food and snack options including popcorn, nachos and sandwiches. The stand will also sell cold weather apparel such as scarves and mittens.
“Along with glowing cressets, hot cider and handmade holiday decorations, Liberty’s Ice Pavilion makes the season even more magical for our guests,” Colonial Williamsburg President and CEO Mitchell B. Reiss said in the release. “We thank the Dominion Foundation for making this spectacular amenity come to life, and we invite our neighbors to come down, lace up, and take in all the hospitality, shopping and fun that Merchants Square and the Historic Area have to offer.”
For the second year in a row, Liberty’s Ice Rink is presented by Dominion Resources. The Dominion Foundation provided a $150,000 grant to fund the skating rink.
“Dominion is pleased to support this engaging addition to the Williamsburg community once again,” Dominion Foundation President Hunter A. Applewhite said in the release. “The rink has proven to be a popular destination for residents and visitors alike, adding energy and excitement to the unique Williamsburg experience.”
Liberty’s Ice Rink will be open seven days a week, as well as holidays. The rink’s hours of operation will be 12 p.m. to 8 p.m. Sunday-Thursday, 12 p.m. to 10 p.m. on Friday, and 10 a.m. to 10 p.m. on Saturday.
The rink will also operate on a 10 a.m. to 10 p.m. schedule for holidays and special events including Thanksgiving Day, the Grand Illumination (Dec. 4), Martin Luther King, Jr. Day, New Year’s Day and Valentine’s Day, as well as every day between Dec. 17-30. Liberty’s Ice Rink will remain open until 1 a.m. on New Year’s Eve for guests who want to ring in the new year on the ice.
