Getting an education can be tough for active-duty military, but it’s about to become a little easier at Tidewater Community College.
TCC, through a partnership with the Department of Defense and Servicemembers Opportunity Colleges (SOC), is offering six career and technical certificate programs to active-duty military in areas of study like information systems technology, electrical wiring and electronics engineering technology, according to a TCC news release.
The goal is to help service members excel at their current jobs while preparing them for careers in the civilian world, said TCC Director for Military Academic Programs Randy Rice.
“This is a great opportunity to start a credential that stacks into an associate degree. Both levels of credential provide a great career or workforce qualification,” Rice said in a release.
The certificates are completed via a combination of in class and online work. They count as college credits and can be applied to an associate or bachelor’s degree at more than 30 SOC schools across the country, the release sates.
TCC is the only Virginia college in the SOC network. The network aims to help service members complete their degrees no matter where they are stationed, Rice said.
“The goal is to keep people from having to start over again every time they are moved to a new station,” Rice added.
