For local residents interested in law enforcement, the James City County Police Department is currently accepting applications for the fall season of its Citizens Police Academy.
The program, started on March 6, 1995 by former Chief of Police David A. Daigneault, was designed as a means of providing the local community an inside look at the operation and function of police procedures, according to a news release from the county.
The fall season will run from Sept. 7 to Dec. 14.
This season’s classes will offer an overview of the JCCPD’s law enforcement philosophy, its divisions, and other areas of police work such as operation of RADAR, traffic stops, DUI enforcement, search and seizures, handgun safety, target practice, internal affairs, crime scene investigations and buildings searches, the release stated.
Students will be given the opportunity to participate in training exercises such as a building search, a ride along, a visit to a shooting range and a guided tour of the Emergency Operations Center.
According to the release, the academy meets for 14 weeks and is free of charge to adults living or working in James City County. The Citizens Police Academy is offered in two sessions, spring and fall.
Most classes will be held at the Law Enforcement Center located at 4600 Opportunity Way, from 7 to 9 p.m. on Wednesdays. There is one Saturday session, which will be held at a firing range. All applicants must undergo a criminal background check before being admitted to the program.
