Looking for a place to cool off? James City County can help. With continued high temperatures expected in the region, JCC is inviting residents to visit local cooling centers.
According to a news release from the county, citizens and visitors are invited to visit the following locations to cool down:
- JCC Recreation Center, 5301 Longhill Road during normal operating hours: Monday through Thursday 6 a.m. to 9 p.m., Friday 6 a.m.to 8 p.m., Saturday 8 a.m. to 6 p.m., Sunday 1 to 6 p.m.
- Williamsburg Library, 515 Scotland Street, or the James City County Library, 7770 Croaker Road during normal operating hours: Monday through Thursday 10 a.m. to 9 p.m., Friday 10 a.m. to 6 p.m., Saturday 10 a.m. to 5 p.m., Sunday 1 to 5 p.m.
In addition, James City County’s Department of Social Services is now accepting cooling assistance applications. The program provides for the purchase or repair of cooling equipment and payment for electricity to operate cooling equipment.
To be eligible, the release states, a household must contain at least one vulnerable individual who is age 60 or over, disabled or under age 6.
The deadline to apply is Aug. 17 and assistance is based on the availability of funds. Residents can apply at commonhelp.virginia.gov or complete a paper application at James City County Department of Social Services, 5249 Olde Towne Road, Monday through Friday, 8 a.m. to 5 p.m.
