A Virginia Beach business that hosts 5K races expects more than 100 people to participate in its morning run today, despite forecasts for the day predicting temperatures higher than 90.
Jerry and Amy Frostick, founders of J&A Racing, launched a weekly 5K race program this summer for vacationers looking to get in a bit of exercise. The 8 a.m. boardwalk races at 31st Street have drawn more than 100 people per event, according to Jerry Frostick. No heat-related injuries or accidents have occurred since the program’s June launch.
“We feel like we keep as good an eye as we can,” Frostick said in a phone interview. “The biggest thing runners love is ice towels – even if it’s not 95 degrees.”
An ice towel is a towel that’s been soaked in ice water. Each runner receives one upon finishing. The company also makes runners aware of the high temperatures, according to Frostick.
“A lot of it is making sure the runners are aware, and drink plenty of water or Gatorade before the race and during the race,” Frostick said.
The events have garnered vacationers from Georgia, New York, New Jersey and Pennsylvania. Runners as young as 7 and as old as 87 have participated, Frostick said. The series lasts until August 10.
