The body of a 27-year-old man has been recovered after he drowned in College Creek Thursday night, according to James City County police.
Edwin Alexander Tejada Delgado, a James City County resident who is originally from El Salvador, was swimming with friends at 7:15 p.m. July 7 in an area of College Creek located off the Colonial Parkway in James City County.
Witnesses reported seeing Delgado in trouble and disappear underwater while he was swimming about 20 feet off shore. The area is a popular swimming spot, but there are posted signs warning of the dangers of swimming or wading in the water, where there can be a strong rip tide.
Both the JCC Police and JCC Fire Departments, along with officers from the National Park Service, responded to the scene. The victim’s body was recovered by divers from the JCCFD Dive Team at 8:20 p.m. approximately 65 feet from where he was last seen.
Deputy Police Chief Steve Rubino said there is no reason to suspect foul play.
“The swimming spot is not an authorized swimming spot,” Rubino said. “There have been several drownings over the years out there and there are signs posted saying it’s not safe to swim.”
Before Thursday the most recent drowning took place in 2012, Rubino said.
