York River State Park is giving locals a chance to get in tune with nature with its As Far as the Stars Night Hike series, which will resume this Saturday from 8:30 to 10 p.m.

Held the first Saturday of each month from May until September, the As Far as the Stars Night Hike is a combination hike and star gazing experience.

Participants will trek through roughly a mile of trails, including the Woodstock Pond Trail, Beaver Trail and Backbone Trail in York River State Park.

John Gresham, an education support specialist with York River State Park, said the hike is beginner friendly and will introduce hikers to some of the animals living within the park.

“Expect to walk through the woods and hear some of the animal sounds from some of the nocturnal creatures,” Gresham said, adding that hiking at night is desirable because hikers are able to beat the heat in the summer months.

Following the hike, which will last roughly one and a half hours, the Virginia Peninsula Astronomy Club will lead a star gazing session.

With their specialized equipment, the Virginia Peninsula Astronomy Club will let hikers view different constellations and explore the night sky away from light-polluted areas.

As Far as the Stars Night Hike costs $4 to attend, all of which covers the costs of parking at York River State Park. To register for the event, call York River State Park at 757-566-3036.
