There will be no more detours for Williamsburg drivers, as the annual milling and paving of roads wrapped up Thursday.
Several areas of the city were affected by the paving program, including Lafayette Street, City Square and sections of Richmond Road.
“The heavy work is done,” said city engineer Aaron Small in a statement. “We still have some punch list items and lane and crosswalk striping to do, but we met our projected deadline. We thank everyone for their patience.”
Most work sites still need lane and crosswalk striping, but the paving was completed before the total project deadline of July 1.
The striping will allow the city to introduce bike lanes on stretches of Richmond Road.
This year’s paving program is estimated to cost $1.6 million, according to an announcement from the City of Williamsburg. Of that total, $500,000 comes from the city and the rest from the Virginia Department of Transportation.
