Virginia Beach’s Callie Dickinson will swim at the same competition as Michael Phelps this month as she hopes to secure a spot on Team USA at the Summer Olympics.

The 16-year old TIDE Swimming athlete will compete in the U.S. Olympic Team Trials Sunday through July 3 in Omaha, Nebraska. She is the only South Hampton Roads swimmer to qualify for the trials, according to a media release.

The Norfolk Academy student earned cuts for and will compete in the following events: 200-meter backstroke, 100-meter butterfly, 400-meter individual medley and 100-meter backstroke.

Qualifying for the all those events “demonstrates the fortitude she brings to practice every day, often twice a day,” said Katy Arris Wilson, president of TIDE Swimming, in a release. “Few 16-year-olds are willing to make the sacrifices Callie makes to reach her goals.”

The trials will be broadcast by NBC Sports. For more information, visit USASwimming.org/TRIALS.
