Sessoms to face three familiar foes for mayoral seat

VIRGINIA BEACH — Mayor Will Sessoms will face familiar adversaries this fall when he fights to keep his elected seat.

Don Weeks, Richard “R.K.” Kowalewitch and George Furman III have filed to oppose the mayor at the ballot box, according to the city’s Voter Registrar’s Office. All three have campaigned for mayor against Sessoms in the past.

Sessoms defeated Kowalewitch in 2012 with 69 percent of the vote. His other two challengers ended their runs before polls opened in the years they ran. Weeks campaigned for mayor in 2008 and Furman in 2012.

Weeks represented Kempsville on the City Council from 1998 to 2000 and lost a bid for that same seat in 2012. He has been the president of his own home-building company since 2002 and a real estate agent since 1991, and currently is on the board of Habitat for Humanity South Hampton Roads, according to his Linkedin page.

Kowalewitch owned RK’s Surf Shop at the Oceanfront until it was seized by a bank and is now a home builder, according to media reports.

Furman, who unsuccessfully ran for City Council in 2010 and 2014, says on his Facebook that he works for the Navy.

Sessoms is a former vice mayor and councilman as well as former president of Towne Bank — a position he resigned from after The Virginian-Pilot published a report detailing votes he made as mayor that affected clients of his bank. In December, he pleaded no contest to one charge of violating the state’s conflict of interest laws.
