VIRGINIA BEACH – Parks & Recreation will rename its Sunday Funday event next month “Sunday RUNday,” as the department celebrates its 60th birthday with its first 5K race.
The July 24 event includes three races — two of which are free to enter — at Mount Trashmore. The city’s first Sunday Funday of the year will follow it. That event includes lawn games, sack races, bounce houses, a DJ and food trucks from Eat the Streets 757. Department instructors will also lead “funky Zumba” and “MixxedFit moves” sessions, according to a release.
The RUNday event includes three races: A 5K, a 1-mile kids fun run, and 1-mile Family Fitness Run/Walk. The races begin at 8 a.m., 9:30 a.m. and 10 a.m., respectively, on July 24 at Mount Trashmore.
The 5K costs $20 in advance and $30 the day of the race. Those who sign up before July 15 will be guaranteed a Sunday RUNday T-shirt. Registrations before June 30 will be entered into a drawing for a $100 Parks & Recreation gift card. The 1-mile runs are free to enter.
The department also needs volunteers to help put on the 5k event. Those who do will receive a free T-shirt. For more information, or to register for the races or volunteer, visit vbgov.com/SundayRUNday.
