As work nears completion for the first phase of the Route 17 widening project in York County, the additional lanes remain closed to traffic from Hampton Highway to AMF York Lanes Bowling Alley.
Crews continue to work multiple shifts inside the lanes to complete final punch-list items and install permanent signage, according to the Virginia Department of Transportation.
The multiple shifts are allowed per contract as long as the lanes remain closed to traffic, which also helps to ensure motorist safety.
Once the final punch list items are completed and the work has been accepted by VDOT, the new lanes will open to traffic in the coming weeks.
In the Phase II installment of the project, which stretches from the bowling alley to Washington Square Shopping Center and Oriana Road and Lakeside Drive, milling and paving of roads continue as well as the construction and paving of entrances.
Drivers can expect daytime single-lane closures from 9 a.m. to 3 p.m.
A new median and placement of curbs and gutters are being constructed in the section as well. In the coming weeks, crews will place topsoil and landscaping in the media areas and paint striping on the roads.
Electrical work for permanent traffic signals is also expected in the area.
In the third phase of the project, stretching from the shopping center to north of Wolf Trap Road, there is workers are installing temporary signal poles, conduits and signage in preparation of milling and paving, which will cause single-lane closures 9 a.m. to 3 p.m. as well.
Crews will also work to widen the road and install storm sewer pipe and water service in the coming weeks.
